Welcome to The Anahuac Area
Small Town Charm Within Driving Distance of the Big City
The Anahuac area on the upper coast of Texas centers around the City of Anahuac. At the mouth of the Trinity River and on Trinity and Galveston bays, Anahuac is seven miles south of Interstate 10 on FM 563. Located centrally in Chambers County, Anahuac is the county seat. The Anahuac area is 45 minutes from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Galveston, and Beaumont/Port Arthur. The communities of Hankamer, Wallisville, Smith Point, Double Bayou, and Oak Island are also part of the diverse landscape that includes everything from fresh and saltwater marshes to densely wooded bayous. The area is known internationally for its rich natural resources. Fishing and oyster industries, farming, ranching, as well as the petrochemical industry call the area home.
This inviting landscape, coupled with the friendly residents and excellent school system, welcome visitors and those looking to call the area home. Citizens enjoy the quality of life that a rural small town has to offer with all the amenities of the nearby metropolitan areas. The many public areas and parks offer the outdoor enthusiast access to a rich landscape and a variety of outdoor activities.
The Anahuac area is also rich in heritage. Chambers County possesses more than 43 state-recognized Historical Markers, as well as museums and libraries. In Anahuac in 1832, an armed conflict between Texas and Mexican forces erupted and blood was shed, sparking fighting at Fort Velasco,
and finally the adoption of the Turtle Bayou resolutions.
This is said to have been the first shots of the Texas Revolution.
