Candy Abshire Wildlife Management.
Located in the extreme south of the county on East Bay, this 208-acre of gulf prairie and marshland area includes a hawk watching tower where thousands of hawks can be seen during the migration periods.
JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace. South of Interstate 10 on the west bank of the Trinity River, the trace includes a four-mile nature trail.
Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge includes over 34,000 acres of coastal marsh habitat for native fish and wildlife. Approximately 12 miles southeast of Anahuac, there are boardwalks for some of the most outstanding alligator and bird watching in Texas.
Trinity River Mouth Water Bird Rookery. East of the Trinity River Bridge on Interstate 10, the rookery includes a boardwalk and observation deck over cypress swamp for bird watchers. Egrets, ibis, spoonbills and anhingas gather in huge numbers, often covering the trees.
Wallisville Lake Visitors Center. With public boat ramps, picnic grounds, restrooms and displays, the center is located one mile east of the Waterbird Rookery.
